Marine diesel engines occupy a solid niche in the market of power plants; they are used in most modern ships and vessels as the main and / or auxiliary element of the power system. Its task is to ensure the progress of the vessel, the operation of pumps, electric generators and other units. A diesel internal combustion engine is more economical in comparison with gas turbine and steam plants, easier to maintain and operate. Marine diesel engines are two- or four-stroke internal combustion engines in which the thermal energy of the fuel burned in the cylinders is converted into the mechanical energy of the movement of the piston and the speed of the crankshaft. The four-stroke duty cycle is carried out in 4 piston strokes or two crankshaft revolutions, in a 2-stroke cycle - in two piston strokes and a crankshaft revolution.

 

Classification

  • Rotation frequency. They are divided into low-speed - from 100 to 350 rpm, medium-speed - from 350 to 750 rpm and high-speed - from 750 to 1500 rpm.
  • Diesel power. They are divided into low power motors — up to 73.5 kW, medium - from 73.5 to 735 kW, and high-power motors with a capacity of more than 735 kW.
  • According to their purpose, they are divided into main (ensuring the progress of the vessel) and auxiliary (ensuring the operation of fans, electric generators, pumps, etc.).
  • The shaft rotation method is reversible and non-reversible. The latter can provide the possibility of reverse through the use of additional equipment - a special reverse gear.
