Fountaine Pajot, a leading global manufacturer of cruise catamarans, was founded in La Rochelle (France). In 1976, Jean-Francois Fontaine, after speaking at the Montreal Olympics, organized the production of 505 class sailing dinghies.

The novelty of the idea and the quality of construction of these dinghies allowed them to gain popularity among the best athletes in France; the company began to develop, introducing other models - 420 and 470, the production of which was carried out at the new shipyard in the city of Aigrefeuille, opened in 1978.

Since 1980, Fountaine Pajot has been manufacturing prototype cruising yachts under the IOR guidelines. Halftones built by the company become world champions and win the Figaro single races. The company is gaining a good reputation in the world of sailing.

The first Fountaine Pajot multihull vessel, the Royale eighteen meter racing trimaran, appears in 1981.

The experience is successful and the shipyard begins to build ships for ocean racing. Large catamarans "Charente Maritime 1 and 2", partially built at the shipyard, win one victory after another, the company begins to evaluate the importance of yachts of this type for sailing cruises.
